PROGRESS LEAGUE.
South Brighton Affairs Discussed. A meeting of the South Brighton Progress League was held in the South Brighton Hall last night. The president (Mr F. W. Woodward j occupied the chair. 1 A recommendation from the executive was that a Christmas-tree be provided, and that a committee be set up to go into the matter. Mr p. Buist mowd that the recommendation be adopted. Mrs C. Sawtell said that if the school was providing a Christmas-tree, that should be sufficient. It was time that charity was cut out. Relief workers’ children were growing up with the idea that they would get something because their parents were up against it. Mr Buist said that something should be done to help the children at Christinas time. It was not a question of charity: it was a festival occasion. The resolution was adorned, and the following committee was set up: Mr and Mrs G. Duncan, Mrs C. Clements, Mrs T. Tyson, Mr P. Buist. Mr F. W. Barcombe and Mr F. Woodward, with power to add. It was decided, on the recommendation of the executive, that a gala he held on January 1, 1935. On the motion of the secretary, it was decided to write to the Borough Council, drawing attention to the abuse of the children’s swings in the Pleasam Point Domain, and asking that the gate be locked at the stipulated time. An invitation was received from the North Linwood Progress League -to a cricket match to take place on Sunday, November 25. Mrs Sawtell moved that the league should not engage in any cricket matches on a Sunday. Messrs Larcombe and Buist opposed the motion, which was lost. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Lawson, that a letter be sent to the council urging that the fire sump at Halsey Street be proceeded with.
