GAMING ACT BREACH.

Participation in Lottery Fined. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, November 6. Participation in Tattersall’s sweepstake, which is a prohibited lottery in New Zealand, cost L. A. Codings a fine of £1 and costs 10s on a charge laid in the Napier Magistrate’s Court this morning in respect of a breach of the Gaming Act. Mr R. M. Watson, S.M., referring to defendant’s plea that he did not know he was committing a breach of the law said, “Ignorance of the law is no excuse. 1 might point out that the maximum penalty under this section is £10.” Detective-Sergeant J. Bickerdike said defendant made a complaint to the police on August 30 last that letters had not been reaching the addressee. Investigations were made, and subsequently defendant admitted that the letters contained Tattersall’s tickets to which he and three others had contributed two shillings each. The detectivesergeant submitted that defendant did not actually have to possess a ticket to be guilty under the section, which provided penalties for participation in prohibited lotteries.
