TRIP IN A BATHYSPHERE.
The pluck of Miss Gloria Hollister, assistant to Dr William Beebe,, the “ marine explorer,” in taking a trip in his bathysphere, will be everywhere admired. Enclosed in a small steel ball, this young lady dived to a depth of over a quarter of a mile below the surface of the ocean, and through its quartz windows watched sea monsters seemingly lit up by electricity. At this lepth the bathysphere is subjected to »\ pressure of nearly half a ton a square inch, and the quartz windows withstand a pressure of nineteen tons. Ihe fact that the steel ball is only six feet in diameter also does not make for comfort; and Miss Hollister is to be complimented on this demonstration of the iron nerves of the sex.
