INDIANAPOLIS.

Magnificent Win in Trotting Cup. HAROLD LOGAN’S GREATNESS. Indianapolis won the thirty-first contest for the New Zealand Trotting Cup in record winning time for the Dominion. It was a magnificent performance. and one that will not readily be forgotten by admirers of a great horse. When Indianapolis was led out of his loose-box early yesterday morning he was very lame, and" his owner, Mr G. J. Barton, and his trainer, F. C. Dunlevey, were much alarmed about the condition of the horse’s foot, which had caused considerable anxiety during the last ten days of his preparation. When he pulled up after his final trial on Saturday he apparently was all right, but complications developed, and yesterday morning the .foot was treated to continuous hot fomentations for several hours, and at breakfast time it was almost decided not to start him. As the morning progressed a veterinary surgeon was summoned and the affected part improved, and with the assistance of a special shoe the horse was taken out and tested. It was then found that he was fairly free of soreness, and so he was taken to the course and sent out to take his place at the starting post. Warmed to his Work. In the early part of the race, Indianapolis exhibited signs of his trouble, and for the first four furlongs he did not hit out in his usual majestic manner. On reaching the stand he warmed to his work, and from there on he gave a real display of his quality, and he won like the great horse his army of admirers proclaimed him to be. He was ably driven by E. C. M’Dermott, who got him away nicely and had him in sixth place when the field had settled down. He moved him into fifth place at end of four furlongs and he was fourth at the mile post. He maintained that position until approaching the back straight the last time, where he went up to the leaders. Half a furlong further on, Indianapolis streaked away from his field, and although tested by Blue Mountain in the straight, he answered to the whip and finished like a bulldog. Private watches credit him with his first mile in 2min 12 2-ssec and his last eight furlongs in 2min 3 2-ssec. His Cup success marks the first for his owner, Mr G. J. Barton, who purchased Indianapolis for £6OO and certain contingencies when the big horse was nearly three years of age.

His sire and his dam, namely, Wrack and Estella Amos, were imported from America, Indianapolis being bred at Ashburton by Mr H. F. Nicoll. Yesterday marked Indianapolis’s seventeenth success, and he has won £4962 in stakes.

The Sectional Times. The sectional times were:—Two furlongs, 35 l-ssec; half-mile, lmin 8 2-5 sec; six furlongs, lmin 40 2-ssec; mile, 2min 12 2-ssec; mile and a quarter, 2min 44 l-ssec; mile and a half, 3min 16 3-ssec; mile and three-quarters, 3min 46 3-ssec; full distance, 4min 15 4-ssec. The previous best winning performance over two miles was done by Satin King, who recorded 4min 16sec when he won the Courtenay Handicap in November last. Harold Logan was responsible for a magnificent performance in conceding his field upwards of 72 yards and finishing third in 4min 12 2-ssec, which is the fastest time ever recorded in a race in New Zealand or Australia. Harold Logan paced his four furlongs in lmin 2 l-ssec, the mile in 2min 6 3-ssec, mile and a half in 3min 9 4-ssec, and the full distance in 4min 12 2-ssec. After the race, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes presented the gold cup to Mr G. J. Barton.
