MELBOURNE CUP.

New Zealand Horses Fail on Wet Track. PETER PAN WINS EASILY. United Pr«ss Assn. By Electric TeJegra ph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, November 6. Despite heavy rain, which set in prior to the first event, there was a huge attendance at the Melbourne Cup meeting. The Duke of Gloucester arrived before the second event and remained until after the Cup. To-day’s Cup weather was the worst since Glenloth won in 1892. The rain abated and the weather was fine during the Cup race. Peter Pan had a remarkable victory, as he won running away, three lengths clear of the second horse. He was the first horse to win two Melbourne Cups since Archer, who was successful in 1861 and 1862. His trainer, Frank M Grath, won previously with Prince Foote. His rider, Derby Munro, was fortunate to secure the mount. J. Pike had been engaged to ride Peter Pan until he was suspended and then J. Munro was engaged for the task, but had to leave for India recently. Sarcherie ran a game race. He was well placed throughout and fought it out stubbornly. Latrobe finished well, while Broad Arrow and Gippsland ran fair races. Nightly beat himself fighting for his head in the early stages of the race. Sir Simper an'd Theo were never dangerous. lolaus, Miramond and Spearfiash were scratched for the Cup. Duke’s Attendance Marred. A tropical rainstorm marred (he Duke’s attendance at the meeting and lie v-as unable to drive in the State carriage down the straight. He entered the stand unheralded under an umbrella. He took the keenest interest in the race and presented the cup to Peter Pan’s owner, stating that Peter Pan was a gallant horse and that he well deserved his second victory. The Duke congratulated the jockey on liis splendid judgment. Sectional Times. Melbourne Cup—First six furlongs, 1 min 24sec; first mile, Imin oOisee; succeeding four furlongs, 56Jsec; last four furlongs, ,533 sec. Badger stated that Sir Simper cut up badly. Bumburnie, a winner in his last three starts at Adelaide, had his fourth successive win in to-day’s hurdle event. The New Zealander, Our Comet, assisted with the pace-making, but knocked up. Sculpin just beat the fast finishing Call Bird in the High-weight Handicap. It was impossible to distinguish the runners until a furlong from the post. There was an exciting finish in the Mimosa Stakes, Lady Primrose winning in the last stride. Bimilla spoilt her chance by running about. This was the winner’s second success. She is one of Mr W. R. Ivemball's New Zea-land-bred team. Woodlace had a comfortable win in the steeplechase. Like the hurdle winner, he is owned and trained in Adelaide. He won the Grand National in July. Nellie’s Tip finished strongly in the first division of the Yan Yean Handicap. Takakua was last early, but finished fast. beat the fast finishing Epigram in the second division. Her trainer, J.
