BRILLIANT BALL.

Officers of Army and Air Force Entertain. AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS. Officers, whether of the Army' or Air Force, havty the reputation of making a brilliant success of any social gathering they may undertake to organise, so that those privileged to receive invitations to the combined ball of the New Zealand Staff Corps, the Roybal New Zealand Artillery' and the Royal New Zealand Air Force, held last evening, felt a pleasurable glow of anticipation. Nor were such hopes unrealised, for last night's ball, which was held at the Winter Garden, amply justified the initiative of the officers in arranging this dance for the first time. It is to be hoped that it may prove to be the forerunner of many other similarly successful gatherings, so that the Army* and Air force ball may come to be recognised as one of the outstanding events of Cup Week. The Winter Garden was looking its best on this important occasion. Red and white azaleas, rhododendrons and peonies made lovely' splashes of colour in the lounge. Those who explored far enough found a covered alley-way reminiscent of the magic cave, leading from the garden door to a marqriee attractively' furnished as an additional lounge. Big baskets of yellow broom placed on the tables were a feature of the decorative scheme. In the fernery a new buffet from which ice-cream and claret cup were dispensed during the evening, had been erected. A delectable supper was served, the tables being decorated with yellow candles in silver candelabra and with vases of Iceland poppies. The Bailey-Marston orchestra was in charge of the dance programme. The Committee. Major W. I. K. Jennings N.Z.S.C. and Captain K. J. Walker N.Z.S.C., the joint secretaries to the committee, in their vigilant care for their guests’ comfort had planned the dance to the last detail.
