Largest Pumping Plant in World. British Official Wireless. RUGBY, October 1. A new sluice and pumping station, which includes the largest pumping installation in the world, was opened bv the Minister of Agriculture. Mr -Walter Elliot. It will drain an area of fen country and deal with the flood waters of the Rivers Ouse and Xene. Mr Elliot said that this vast area which would be drained included some of the most fertile land of England, representing £3,000,000 in value and the livelihood of many thousands of men and women. Seventy per cent of the labour employed for the construction of the pumping scheme was obtained from distressed mining areas, and manv of these men have found permanent work in the district.
