The greatest fortress, from a strategical point of view, is the famous stronghold of Gibraltar. It occupies a rocky peninsula jutting into the sea. about three miles long and three-quar-ters of a mile wide. One central rock rises to a height of 1435 feet above sea level. Its northern face is almost perpendicular, while its east side lull of tremendous precipices. On the south it terminates in what is called “ liuropa Point.” The west side is less -teep than the east, and between its base and the sea is the narrow, almost level span on which the town ol Gibraltar is built. The fortress is considered to be impregnable to military assault.
