OBITUARY.

Rev Jesse Boothroyd,

The death has occurred in Christchurch at the age of seventy-six of the Rev Jesse Boothroyd, a retired Alethodist minister, well-known throughout New Zealand.

Air Boothroyd was born at Huddersfield, Yorkshire, in 1858, and was educated for the ministry at Hartley College, Alanchester. He joined the Primitive Methodist Church, and came to New Zealand when he was twenty-five years of age. He was first stationed at Bluff, moving later to Auckland, Geraldine and Christchurch. He married, at the Cambridge Terrace Alethodist Church, Miss Alartha Haigh, of Dewsbury, Yorkshire, who came to New Zealand for the ceremony. After his marriage. Air Boothroyd served at Geraldine and Ash burton, and then resigned from the Church to start business as a bookseller in Timaru. A few years later, when the two churches amalgamated into the Afethodist Church of New Zealand, Air Boothroyd rejoined as a home missionary. His first station was Alurchison, where he did much good work. Alost of his travelling was done on horseback through bush country. He then went to Inglewood (Taranaki) and Norsewood (Hawke’s Bay) and returned to the South Island to carry on home mission work at Waddington and Rakaia. His last post was in supply of Stratford. After that, he retired, and for the past three years has been living in Christchurch.

Air Boothroyd is survived by his widow three daughters, and two sons.

James R. Gilchrist. The death occurred suddenly last night of Mr James Ramsay Gilchrist, aged sixty-eight years, a well-known breeder of Border Leicester sheep and a highl} r -esteemed resident of North Otago. He was a son of Mr J. C. Gilchrist, the first Mayor of Oamaru. He farmed successfully the Rosebery Estate, which, a few years ago, was purchased by the Crown and subdivided. Mr Gilchrist in his younger days was a fine athlete. He has been a generous supporter of sporting and musical organisations and of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. J. A. Hennessy. Mr John Andrew Hennessy, who died recently at Sumner, was an old and respected resident. He was born at Cape Town, South Africa, in 1863, and arrived in Auckland with his parents in the ship Moira on Christmas Day, 1864. Mr Hennessy was a member of the staff of the Lyttelton Times Company for over 40 years, and retired from work about four years ago. For over a quarter of a century he was a zealous worker in the Roman Catholic parish of Sumner, and during the whole of this period he looked after the church property. He endeared himself to all who came in contact with him. He was of a very retiring and modest nature, and will be particularly missed by the children of the Convent School. In his earlier days Mr Hennessy was a member of the Roman Catholic Cathedral parish and a prominent member of the choir. He is survived by his widow and one daughter. Miss M. Hennessy, of Sumner. A Requiem Mass was celebrated at Sumner during the week.
