Activities of Soldiers’ Club. OFFICERS ELECTED. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, July 19. The annual meeting of the Ashburton Returned Soldiers’ Club was held tonight, the president (Mr E. B. Newton), being in the chair. In its annual report the committee congratulated members on the club's sound financial position. The committee appealed to the public, who had generously supported the club in the past, to assist in carrying on the good work and to maintain what was to many the returned men’s home. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, Mr J. K. Grigg; president, Mr E. B. Newton; vice-president, Mr W. R. Lane; committee, Messrs H. Morris, H. Smallbone, E. Buchanann (civilian representatives) and Messrs F. A., Hickman, R. Bain, L, Fowke (R.S.A. representatives), Messrs T. Jamieson and D. Smith (members’ representatives) ; treasurer, Mr H. Smallbone; secretary, Mr W. H. Amos; auditor, Mr F. A. Hickman; social committee, Messrs H. M’Nicol, J. Stone (R.S.A.). C. J. Bax, T. Jamieson, J. S. Weeks, M. Smith, J. Dobbin, P. Hansen (members) . It was reported on behalf of the Social Committee that the year had begun with a credit of £2O 5s 9d and had closed with a credit of £2l 6s Id. St Stephen’s Uterary Club. The weekly meeting of the St Stephen’s Literary and Social Club was held last evening. The president, Mr S. M. Cassidy, occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance. Arrangements for the hockey dance to be held in the Parish Hall next Saturda3' were completed. An invitation from the Oddfellows’ Lodge to a debate on July 26 was accepted. Messrs Cassidy, C. Childs and L. Armstrong will comprise the team. For the debate against the Catholic Club, the team is, Messrs Cassidy, B. Hampton and O. Bathurst. It was decided to challenge the newlyformed Methven Anglican Men’s Club to a debate at Methven on August 27. “Impromptu Speeches’* was the programme for the evening, each member taking part. Swimming Club’s Social.
The newly formed Social Club of the East Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club held the first fortnightly social in the Hampstead Memorial Hall last evening. There was a good attendance and an enjoyable evening was spent in games and dancing. Music was supplied by Miss K. Chapman and Messrs R. Flatman and L. Armstrong. The next social will be held on August 1. Boy Recovering. The three-year-old boy Robert James Moore, of Lvnnford, who swallowed some rat poison and was admitted to the Ashburton County Hospital, was reported to-day to be making a satisfactory recovery. Personal. Reference to the death of Mr F. Z. D. Ferriman was made at to-night’s annual meeting of the Ashburton Soldiers’ Club. The committee, in its report, stated that it was with feelings of sorrow and regret that the death of the “Father of the Club,” and the returned men’s great-hearted friend had been recorded. His unbounded love and affection for the returned men was ever predominant and they in return would cherish his memory. Men--1 tion was also made of the death of Colonel J. Studholnie, D.S.O. His services in the Great War were well known and were fully appreciated. As a tribute to the memory of Mr Ferriman, the Rev A. S. Watson unveiled an enlarged photograph presented by club members.
