SHIELD GAME.

Hawke’s Bay Challengers Arrive. TRAINING IS COMMENCED. Enthusiasts -who visited the Showgrounds this morning to watch the Hawke’s Bay Rugby representatives practising win bear out the reports concerning the size of the visiting forwards. As they practised their scrum and line-out tactics they looked a formidable eight, and though it is hard to form an estimate by merely watching a practice run, it would seem that the backs also are an able combination. The visitors arrived by the ferry steamer this morning, and are staying at Storey’s Hotel. All are fit, and the team is looking forward' to an excellent game with Canterbury, whether Hawke’s Bay lifts the coveted Ranfurly Shield or not. The joint managers are Messrs W. D. Corbett and L. E. Harris, and the selector, Mr Norman M’Kenzie, is also with the side. Other travellers with the team include Messrs W. Anderson (secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Union), J. Swain (the ex-All Black), E. A Young, A. Ellis, H. Cohen, J. Friend, Y. A. Collett, Hayes and M’Nab. The Teams. The Hawke’s Bay side for to-morrow is as follows: Full-back—J. Vartan. Three-quarters— E. Apsey, E. Evans, C. Smith. The visitors went to Lancaster Park first this morning, but the ground was still on the heavy side, and it was decided to avoid the risk of cutting it up before the match. They will go for a drive this afternoon and visit a picture show this evening. After the game tomorrow the teams will be the guests of the Canterbury Union at a dinner. (Prospects for the match are reviewed on Page 11.) HART NOT AVAILABLE. Mann Will Replace Him To-morrow. G. F. Hart will not be available for to-morrow’s game, and W. Mann (Merivale) will replace him in the Canterbury side. A. W. Roberts (Albion) will be an emergency.
