Words and Phrases.
“A HIKER” writes: Can you tell me whether the word alps is a foreign word, and, secondly, whether it is a distinct name as apart from a description of a range? The word is a foreign word. In fact, it is supposed to have come originally from the Gaelic alp, a high mountain, end later from the French and Latin alpes, for the Alps of Southern Europe. The New Zealand range is the Southern Alps, which is the definite geographical name and should be spelt with capital letters. \ TOUCHSTONE.
