THE “IT-METER.”
Answers an Important Question. PERSONAL CHARM REGISTERED,
Have you got, you know what, to parody the words of the old song. Right down in the bottom of your own heart you are inclined to believe, no doubt, that you have. The mysterious quality, which the Americans laconically designate “ it,” is desired by every woman, and probably every m?n. Well, the time to apply the crucial test has arrived. Go to Hay’s, Ltd., and try yourself out on the “ It-Aleter,” the invention of a Dutch scientist, on which the measure of your personal charm is registered exactly.
There is nothing alarming in the pro ceedings, just a clasping of hands, a whirr of wheels and hey presto! The dial registers your percentage of “it.” You emerge from the privacy of a curtained alcove bearing a card with magic figures—Maybe 60 or 75—or if you are lucky enough you might record 100. This is the highest possible, but the 100 per cent “it” girl has yet to be found, nor has there been discovered a 100 per cent “it” man.
In Melbourne a charming red-haired "'pan set a record with 99 and in Adelaide a man of average appearance registered 90. Perhaps the 100 per cent “it” girl or man (for men are just as anxious to learn their extent of their “appeal” as women) will be found in Christchurch. The next few weeks will tell. Yesterday at a private trial of the
“It-Aleter,” several well-known business people took the test, with surprising results. The handsome man with broad shoulders and slender hips stepped in with a self confident smile, but alas, he returned, crestfallen. His card, reluctantly produced, registered a mere 55. Obviously he felt thbre had been some mistake. He will go back to try again. His friend, no one would call him handsome, homely would be the word, came out a new man, looking several inches taller and proudly displayed his card, a 75. The demure “Aliss’ who accompanied the blonde from the beauty parlours, had “it” too, all un suspectinglv. She registered 80, while the blonde showed a mere 65. In Australia, where the machine has taken all the large cities by storm, it has been found that the average recording for a woman is 62 and for a man a few points lower. The lure of the elusive “it” is likely to prove a great attraction in Christchurch, and a large crowd is expected at Hay’s this afternoon to test the wonderful machine.
