Mr Justice Johnston and Mrs Johnston returned to Christchurch this morning from Wellington.

Miss Relda Duncan, Rossall Street, returned to Christchurch this morning from a visit to Wellington. Miss P. Mayo, England, arrived in Christchurch this week, and has left for Peel Forest, where she is the guest of Mrs G. H. Dennistoun. Miss A. Whelch, Hawke’s Bay, is visiting her sister and brother-in-law, Mr and Mrs Pat Barrett, “ Gresford,” Papanui Road.

Mrs T. Phillips, Windwhistle, and her daughter, Airs Edgar Stead, “ Ilam,” Riccarton, will leave this evening for Auckland. Airs H. W. Hall, Te Weka Street, Timaru, is visiting Christchurch. Airs Ross Brodie, Rangitata Island, is spending a few days in Christchurch. Airs A. S. Ashmore, King Country, is visiting her sister and brother-in-law, Mr and Mrs T. W. C. Tothill, Rolleston Avenue.

Air and Mrs W. F. Saunders. Walsall Street, Lower Riccarton, who hav been visiting relations in the Xorth Island, have returned home. Miss Sailv Newton, The Willows, Ashburton, and Aliss Janet Stevenson, Fendalton, will be Miss Janet Qverton’s guests at Ramati. Scargill. this week. Airs T. B. G. Winch, Auckland, who has been staying in Christchurch, is now in Wellington, where she is the guest of Airs J. S. Elliott, Kent Terrace.

Mr and Airs Arthur Elworthy. Holme Station, who are the guests of their Excellencies Lord and Lady Bledisloe. Government House, Wellington, are expected to return home to-morrow. Aliss Elsie Goldie, who has been the guest of her sister. Airs Trevor Hawke.?, Cashmere Hills, for a few days, will leave to-day to visit her mother in Ti maru.

ATrs A. H. Oswin, Leinster Road, who recentlv underwent a serious operation in a private hospital at Dunedin, is now well on the road to recoverv and hopes to return to her home early in August. Miss Patricia Stewart has returned to Christchurch from a visit to her brother and sister-in-law. Air and Airs lan Stewart, in Invercargill. She will leave next week to stay with Aliss Alollie Alasefield, Akaroa. Aliss L. Sullivan, AI.A., of Dunedin, who will be head of the education section for New Zealand at the Women’s Pan-Pacific Conference, passed through Christchurch yesterday en route to Auckland to join the Niagara for Honolulu.

A committee of friends and admirers of Aliss Jessie Mackay, one of New Zealand s best-known poets, has been formed, with the purpose of presenting her with a letter of appreciation and a gift as a tribute to her work. Those interested in this scheme include both New Zealanders and Australians, admirers of her literary work, and others who have been associated with her in her many activities. Aliss Alackav’s best-known book is her collection of poems, “ Land of the Morning.” At present the authoress lives in retirement on Cashmere Hills, but she formerly took an active part in many social movements, being particularly interested in temperance, feminism, Scottish home rule, vegetarianism and anti-vivisection.
