A scheme lias been inaugurated in New Brighton to -supply the registered unemployed with meat at cost price. On Monday evening a deputation waited on the Borough Council to solicit finan-
cial assistance and the use of the building in the council yard which was erected la#*t year for the distribution of meat. The Mayor (Mr E. A. M. Leaver) and the chairman of finance (Councillor R. E. Holloway) were appointed to confer with the men, and yesterday it was announced that the scheme would be put into operation.
Mr Leaver has decided to finance the purchase of the first week’s meat from the Addington market, and it. is hoped [Kit the scheme will then be self-sup-porting. Mr Leaver said that he wae merely helping the men to help them selves. The meat will be purchased at the market, carted to New Brighton and cut up with the assistance of two butchers employed under the No. o scheme. The men will then be able to buv it at cost price. Starting next week a further scheme will bo put into operation under which registered unemployed men, together with their wives and families, will be able to obtain medical treatment for the sum of 6d per week.
