In every society there Is an accumulation of funds to provide for all the obligations contracted for, but in his presidential address at the Dominion Council of Friendly Societies Conference Brother J. K. Maefie struck a new note when he said: “ The future is rife with great possibilities. All that is needed is a combination of will and effort on the

part of members to make the society stronger, better and more extensive in its operations than formerly. While times are difficult at presept, they are not Hopeless, and if the cinema and other sources can make their appeal and succeed, which, after all, is only amusement and pleasure, surely we, Who stand for greater and bigger things, and who give great returns for amounts paid, can make our .appeal and succeed in winning the youth to a knowledge of the big things of life, and help them to feel and realise the true purpose of life.” He appealed to members for grafter service and effort in a cause that is worthy of their very best; remembering that they are members of a movement that is not dying or insecure, but, on the other hand, healthy, virile and sound; sound numerically, intellectually and financially; and it is claimed with confidence that every member who is now in the societies will be assured of the benefits for which he contracts. “Let us have the spirit of. daring which animated and possessed our forefathers, and go on feeling it is really worth while because we belong to a movement which is for the uplift and advancement of mankind.” 1.0.0. F. Star of Opawa Lodge.—A cordial welcome was extended to D.D.G.M. Brother J. Archer by the Noble Grand (Brother O. Thompson). The North Canterbury Encampment notified the conferring of the Patriarchal degree, and a circular was recevied from Grand Lodge office. It was decided to pay an official visit to Brighter Greymouth Lodge in. November. Brother J. Archer. D.D.G.M., conferred the Past Grand’s degree on a number of Past Grands present. Brother Rintoul, of Washington Lodge, ■ ww accoorded a welcome, and on the conclusion of lodge business members were entertained with cards, games and radio broadcasts, followed by supper. X.O.R. Pride of Christchurch Tent.—The Chief Ruler (Brother J. Provan) presided over a good attendance of officers and members at the fortnightly meeting. Sick pay was passed for payment. Members were invited to attend the Riccarton Tent anniversary to be held on August 1. Juvenile superintendents’ reports, given by Sister G. Bunt and Brother R. Anstiss, showed an increase. The secretary (Brother C. H. Bascand), Guardian (Sister Billson) and Assistant Levite (Brother Rowberry) were installed by P.P.C.R. Brother T. Nuttail, assisted by Sister E. Musgrove as installing Levite. Sister and Brother Billson were in charge of the social portion of the evening. XJ.A.0.8. Boys’ Juvenile Lodge.—The Ivy of Linwood is to be congratulated on taking this matter up so zealously. It is a far cry to the period when a juvenile lodge of Druids existed in Christchurch, but there are still a few prominent members of the Order to-day who were members of the juvenile lodge in Sydenham nearly half a century ago. Success can only be achieved in the juvenile movement when those concerned in its management are prepared to give the time and thought to the advancement of the lodge. Only a certain number of members can be interested by holding office, and they may be very keen., but the problem is to retain the interest of the “floor-members.” In this connection great assistance may be afforded the promoters by consultation with superintendents of other juvenile societies. The management committee has given,

no doubt, careful consideration to the whole matter before the proposal was launched, but if it is anticipated that the juveniles will transfer to the adult lodges when they have reached the age necessary for admission, then the les-

sons of the Friendly Society movement must be carefully and thoroughly instilled into the youthful minds. It is to be hoped that the meetings will be made the training-place of the future leaders of Druidism, and not merely a place for recreation. It must be conceded that certain phases of entertainment must be introduced, but even this side of the question can be made for the intellectual as well as the social advancement of members. The opening of the new lodge will take place on July 24. and it is arranged that Tima.ru Juve-

nile Lodge will conduct the initiation of the candidates and the installation,, of officers will be conducted by Brother L. B. Freeman (Grand President). Considerable interest is being shown by the adult lodges, and Trafalgar Lodge (Kaiapoi) has presented a set of regalia. Brothers J. F. Harrington and P.A. Brother A. Kilgour deserve the greatest praise for the efforts they have put into the formation of the lodge. Pioneer Lodge.—The Arch Druid (Brother Klnley) presided over the ineeting, and invitations were accepted to attend the opening of the Juvenile Lodge in the Orange Hall on July 27, and to play a card match with Loyal City of Christchurch, M.U.. 1.0.0. F.. on Monday, July 23. The lodge was notified of the visit of the efficiency judges next lodge night. A committee was set up to report in a month’s time on the question of a Christmas tree. 1.0.0. F. Washington LoUge.—The inclement weather did not affect the attendance at the anniversary social, the hall being crowded with members and friends. The recent renovations to the interior of the hall, together with the decorative scheme on the dais, formed a brilliant combination, which was further enhanced by the greenery on the trellis being interwoven with gleaming coloured lights. Music was supplied by Peter Bryson’s band, and extras contributed by Mr Munnerley. The guests of honour were the Lady District Deputy Grand Master (Sister M. Latimer), the District Deputy Grand Master (Brother James Archer), the Grand Lodge representatives (Past Grands Brothers W. Greenslade, W. H. Simmons and ,J. M’Cullough) and the Noble Grands of the lodges in the North Canterbury District. The N 0.. Brother C. A. Alsop. who briefly welcomed the guests, and Brother A. Rintoul were joint masters of ceremonies. Special reference was made to the work of the secretary (Brother W. H. Simmons), assisted by his wife. Items were given by the Christchurch Harmonica Band. Mrs Hyde, Messrs Mahoney, R. Foster, A. Keen and Munnerley. 8E.U.,1.0.0.F. North Canterbury District Executive. —Brother F. Cole (D.G.M.) presided at the fortnightly meeting, and applications were granted from Benevolent and Volunteer Lodges for visits from the .Ritual and Instruction Committee. The arrangements are well forward for the efficiency competitions, and so far ten lodges have signified their intention of entering. The district officers’ next official visit will take place at Loyal Volunteer Lodge on July 25. Loyal Past Grands’ Lodge No. I.—The Purple Degree was conferred on a number of * candidates of the Loyal Leeston Lodge last Saturday night. The visiting brethren were accorded a hearty welcome and a vote of thanks. On Tuesday night the monthly meeting was presided over by Brother A. Foster, and at the conclusion of the ordinary business the lodge adjourned to allow the District officers to confer the Degree on three sisters and six brothers. Four new members were initiated into the Past Grands’ Lodge. The District Secretary (Brother T. J. Archbold) gave an interesting resume of the alterations to be made in the lodge ritual of the Order, and further discussion will take place on the return of the delegates from the conference in England. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the District officers and to Brother Prestidge (president of Past Grands* Lodge No. 2).

Presentation to I.P.G.M. Brother S. J. Geary.—The hall In Canon Street was filled to its capacity with visitors and members at the last meeting. The District Grand Master (Brother F. Cole) presented the district testimonial in the form of a radio set to Brother S. J. Geary, I.P.G.M. In the course of the presentation congratulations were extended to the recipient on the completion of his term of office, and the hope was expressed that Brother Geary would achieve higher honours. A Past District Grand Master’s jewel was also presented to Brother Geary, which was a token of his lodge’s esteem. In returning thanks the recipient expressed his thanks for the loyal support accorded him during his term of office as District Grand Master, and assured members that it was his intention to continue his activities for the Order.

Loyal Rangiora Lodge.—Brother A. H. Miles, N.G.. presided, and at the conclusion of the meeting members of the Loyal Woodend Lodge joined in a flag 500 tournament, the winners of which were Brothers J. A. "Miles. W. Gardner and R. A. Scott. Consolation prizes were awarded to Brothers C. R. Golding. R. A. Harlow and J. Cooke. The visitors were afterwards entertained at supper and the hope was expressed that a similar tournament would soon be held at Woodend. Loyal City of Christchurch.—The N.G. (Brother E. Tomlinson) presided. Visitors from the Loyal Sister Pearce and Kaiapoi Lodges were welcomed. The Pioneer Lodge No. 1, U.A.0.D., wrote accepting the lodge’s invitation to a card match on Monday, July 23. Sister Brizley (Sister Pearce Lodge) and N.G. Brother Miles (Kaiapoi Lodge) thanked the lodge for the welcome they had received. The routine business being concluded. a number of members’ wives and women friends were admitted. Supper was served and a pleasant social evening was spent. The lodge will meet at seven o’clock on the occasion of the card match with the Pioneer Lodge, U.A.O.D.
