W, J.-TOMKINSON. During his address to members of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, the president, Mr H. F. Nicoll, referred to the death of the late Mr W. J. Tomkinson. Mr Nicoll said that Mr Tomkinson was a man w’ho was welcomed wherever he went for his personality. He was a man who specialised in the training of horses of the highest class, and he always enjoyed the confidence of his owners. Mr Nicoll extended his sympathy to the late sportsman’s widow and family. FOR GREYMOUTH. J. Bryce intends taking Ringamata to the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting next week. This will mark the gelding’s first appearance as a three-year-old. Ringamata showed a lot of promise when trained during the early part of his two-year-old year, and he was one of the best looking colts of his period, but after competing in two races he trained off, and so J. Bryce decided to have him gelded and spelled. Ringamata is a half-brother to Red Shadow, being by Ahuriri from Our Aggie. On breeding, he should make a good stake-earner. BEST TIME EFFORTS. Some very smart times were registered on the country courses in the Auckland province this season, and, in spite of the fact that the Caludelands track was not as fast in May as earlier in the season, the brilliant Impromptu succeeded in equalling the New Zealand grass track record of 2min 4 l-ssec, a fine performance under the circumstances. Linella, 2min 45 l-ssec, was the star performer at a mile and a quarter, while Free Logan, 2min 45 4-5 sec, and Ringtrue, 2min 46 2-ssec, also performed well at the distance. At a mile and a half Kewpie’s King, 3min 23 2-ssec, did best, while Kewpie’s Bond, 3mm 24 3-ssec, put up a splendid performance for one in her class. Willie Derby, 3min 25sec, and Wee 3min 25 2-ssec, were the best of the others, while Gala Day’s 3min 32sec was the fastest recorded by a straightout trotter. Kewpie’s Guy, who went 4min 25sec in the spring, took the twomiles honours, but Willie Derby’s 4min 27 4-ssec in May was a high-class effort. At the same meeting Chancellor’s 4min 33 2-ssec was a fine performance for a three-year-old. At Te Aroha both the sprint and two-miles honours went to Pukemiro, who, in finishing second, ran 2min 44sec and 4min 33 3-osec respectively. At a mile and a half Alexis, 3min 24 3-ssec, recorded the best effort. Smooger registered a very, smart mile and a quarter at Thames, going 2min 44 l-ssec to dead-heat with Donum, who went 2min 45 l-ssec, with Pukemiro recording 2min 45 2-ssec. The last-named, with another second, registered the best two-miles time, 4min 34sec. SEASON’S FIGURES. The outstanding position of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club was shown in a table which was distributed to the delegates at the Trotting Conference. With nine days’ racing this season, it provided £23,000 in stakes and the totalisator investments were £280.309 10s. The Auckland Trotting Club was second on the list, with eleven days’ racing, £15,200 in stakes and totalisator £227,521 5s Then there was a big drop to Forbury Park, six days’ racing, stakes £7900 and totalisator £93,662; followed by Wellington, five days, stakes £6420, totalisator £63,844 10s: Canterbury Park, four days, stakes £5685, totalisator. £62,537 10s; New Brighton, four days, stakes £4450. totalisator £59,609 10s; Ashburton. three days, stakes £5490, totalisator £40,220 10s. ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

Elections for both committee and stewards of the Auckland Trotting Club for the coming season are necessary. For the committee the seven retiring members are opposed by three newcomers, including two prominent owners. Mr M. J. Moodabe and Dr M. G. Pezaro. There are ten vacancies on the stewards and thirteen nominations have been received, comprising seven retiring stewards and six newcomers, among them being Messrs W. K. Francis and S. Ward, owners of trotting horses.
