Burnside Stock and Other Sales. SMALLER ENTRIES. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN. July 18. There was a comparatively small entry of cattle and a larger number of sheep in the major sections at to-day's Burnside market. Cattle—Only 225 head were yarded. There was a good selection of medium to prime quality bullocks and heifers, with a few extra prime heavy bullocks included*. Owins to the smaller entry and to the competition of country butchers, all sorts made improved I values from the opening. All over, best bullocks may be quoted at £1 up, best 1 heifers and medium bullocks at 15s and good cows at 10s up. Extra prime I heavy bullocks made to £l4 2s ,6d. prime ! heavy £9 2s 6d to £lO 7s 6d, medium £7 I 7s 6d to £8 17s 6d. light £5 2s 6d to £6 17s fid. Prime heavy heifers made to £8 12s 6(?, medium cows and medium 1 heifers £5 17s 6d to £6 17s 6d, medium £4 7s 6d to £5 12s Gd, light £3 2s 6d to £4 2s 6d. An entry of 1700 fat sheep contained a much large proportion of wethers than usual, and a. sprinkling of hoggets. The sale was erratic, owing partly to the occasional competition of an outside buyer, but generally values were last week’s rates for wethers, with ewes selling at from par to Is below. Extra prime heavy wethers made to 325, prime heavy 27s to 295, medium 24s to 27s 6d, light 20s to 235. Extra prime heavy ewes made to 225, prime heavy 17s to 19s, medium 15s to 16s 6d, light 12s to 14s.

The store cattle section attracted an exceptionally small entry. only _65 head being penned. These comprised solely vealers and cull cows. The former. on account of a short supply, met with a brisk demand, prices advancing by fully 5s a head, and best quality sorts selling to £4 10s. Cull cows showed a slight improvement on the low rates obtained at the previous market. The dairy entry numbered 30 head, the offering including a number of spring cnlvers. Young cows close to profit sold to £5 15s, but spring calvers were wanted only at reduced rates. Under a brisk demand, good quality porkers sold to £2 7s, and best baconers to £3 14s. The yarding numbered 105 head. Only fourteen store pigs were forward, and these sold under keen competition. Westfield. (Special to the ” Star.”) AUCKLAND, July 18. With a shorter swarding in all classes and offerings of well above average quality, there was a very bright tone at the Westfield sale. Beef cattle were not offered in the usual numbers, but some of the best sorts for a long time were forward. Competition was steady, and last week’s advanced prices were fully sustained. Many individual offerings commanded good figures, one lot averaging over £ll, with plenty of others over £lO. The best cow made £8 15s. Extra choice ox beef made 23s a 1001 b, choice ancP prime 18s to 225, secondary and plain 14s to 18s, prime young cow and heifer beef 18s to 225, other cow beef 10s to 17s. Extra heavy prime steers made from £lO 5s to £ll 10s, heavy prime £9 to £lO 2s 6d, lighter prime £7 15s to £8 17s 6d, light prime £6 to £7 12s ’ 6d. small and unfinished £4 10s to £5 17s 6d, extra heavy prime young cows and heifers £6 7s 6d to £8 15s, heavy prime £5 to £6 ss, lighter prime £3 15s to £4 17s 6d, other killable cows £1 18s to £3 12s 6d. There was an average yarding of sheep, with many pens of well finished lines. The demand* was good throughout, values showing a firming tendency. Prime sorts improved by Is a head. A small lot of extra prime wethers sold for 32s 3d. Wethers, prime 24s to 30s 6d, unfinished 20s to 245; ewes, prime 18s to 25s 9d. unfinished 13s to 18s. Lambs, in short supply, mostly of good quality, sold under keen competition at recent rates. Lambs, prime 17s 6d to 25s 6d, unfinished 12s to 17s 6d. Calves were yarded in numbens insufficient for requirements. A verv brisk sale resulted, and values for all butchers’ sorts rose sharply. Runners 3Ss to 765, vealers 33s to 665, bobby calves Is to 3s. There was a short yarding of pigs, except prime baconers, of which there was an exceptionally good offering. The sale resulted in high prices being sustained. One line of 60 sold to 775, with an average of 745. Porkers, in short supply, were keenly sought, and improved by fully 2s a head. Stores met with a good demand, selling at late rates. Baconers 51s t.o 795, porkers 30s to 4 7s, large stores 21s to 295. Prices a lb were:—Baconers 5d to s£d, porkers 5d to 52d.

Stortford Xiodga. HASTINGS, July 18. Heifer and cow beef prices rose at to-day’s sale at Stortford Lodge. Bullock prices showed an easier tendency An entry of 190 head came forward, the bulk of the purchasing being done by local buyers. Bullocks, medium to prime £7 to £8 4s, others from £5; cows, medium to prime £3 16s to £4. others from £3; heifers, medium to prime £4 5s to £5, others from £2 18s 6d. Few store cattle were entered. Bollock made to £4 I7s.

Fat Sheep—2ooo were offered. There was little outside inquiry. Values eased on fat ewes and wethers. Lambs were unchanged!. Fat ewes, medium to prime 20s 6 ct to 26s sd. others from 15s 9d; fat wethers, medium to prime 25s to 30s. others from 21s 6d; lambs. 17s 6d to 21s 4d. In the store sheep section, ewes in lamb were easier. Empty ewe hoggets and wethers sold fairly well at late rates. Wethers to 22s Gd. ewes to 21s 6d, hoggets to 19s. Poultry and Eggm.

The Canterbury Co-op. Poultry Producers report that at their mid-week sales yesterday, heavy yardings of all classes of poultry were offered to a large and representative gathering of buyers. Turkeys came to hand in increased numbers, with the result that values eased slightly. Good quality chickens and hens were again In keen demand and prices remained firm. A line of well-conditioned White Leghorns were keenly competed for and realised up to 5s 3d per pair. Quite a number of the chickens coming forward were slightly on the hard side, but owing to the shortage of well finished chickens, the former were disposed of at* quite satisfactory prices. The following prices were realised per pair:—Roasting chickens: Heavy are in good demand and realised as high as 9s 6d; medium are coming to hand in fair supnly and brought as high ns 7s 3d; light—the supply of these has eased somewhat, and realised up to 5s 3d. Boilers: Heavy—these are still short of supply and no difficulty was experienced in quitting the best of these at prices up to 7s; medium to light comprised the bulk of the sale and realised up to 5s 3d. Goslings sold at 6s, while ducks brought up to 7s. Turkeys realised from Sd to Is per lb. Egg Market.—Eggs, machine graded, tested and guaranteed—First grade Is 4d. second grade Is 3d.

H. C. Smith, of the City Market, reports a large entry at Wednesday’s and Saturday’s poultry sales.
