Mr Justice Johnston arrived from Wellington this morning. Mr N. D. Griffen is a guest at the United Service Hotel.

Mr J. Jamieson (Auckland) is staving at the Clarendon Hotel.

Messrs L. G. Davison (Wellington) and F. Chapman (Auckland) are staying at Warner’s Hotel. Messrs F. Jones, M.P., and J. W. Munro, M.P., arrived from Wellington this morning. Messrs B. Whitcombe, K. M. Gresson and W. Leadley arrived from the north this morning. Mr A. J. M’Eldowney and Major W. E. S. Furby left for Dunedin yesterday on Scout business. Dr Arthur E. Marsack, a former prominent ‘Auckland medical practitioner, has died in England. Mr S. 11. Kirkcaldie, of Wellington, returned by the Wanganella yesterday from a holiday visit to Australia.

Mr 11. Ormond Hutchinson, formerly manager of Colonial Motors, Timaru, has arrived in Christchurch and has taken over his new duties as manager of Ford Motors (Canterbury), Ltd.

A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr J. Suckling was passed by the North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union at its meeting last night.

The appointment of Mr Robert Cole, at present headmaster of the Mangapapa School, Gisborne, as new headmaster of the Petone School, is announced by the Wellington Educational Board. The death has occurred at Dunedin of Frederick Foster, fifty-seven years of age, treasurer of the Otago Boxing Association, a member of the Otago Wrestling Association and a life member of the North End Boating Club. r - rt. J. M’Clelland, a member of the North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union, was accorded a vote of sympathy in the death of his wife, by the centre at its meeting last night. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr H. G. Ell was passed by the council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society last evening. Mr Ell was an honorary life member of the society and was %ne of its keenest supporters. The promotion of Mr W. Stewart, Commissioner of Crown Lands in Canterbury, to the position of ValuerGeneral, w r as the subject of a congratulatory motion passed by the Christchurch branch of the Town Planning Institute of New Zealand at its monthly meeting last evening. At a meeting of the committee of the Addington Public Library a motion of condolence was passed to Mrs H. G. Ell and family. The president (Mr R. Flintoff) said that the late Mr Ell had been successful in procuring the site that the library stands on and in many ether ways had helped to lay the foundation of this popular institution. Professor E. Percival and Messrs J. Mackenzie (secretary of the Ellesmere Land Drainage Board) and H. W. Harris (engineer to the Waimakariri River Trust) were unanimously elected supernumerary members of the council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society at last evening’s Meeting of the council.

Mr L". J. Yercoe, accountant of the Nelson branch of the Commercial Bank of Australia, has received notice of his appointment as senior relieving officer lor the South Island, to be stationed at the Christchurch branch. Mr A. N. Ayschford, accountant at the Motueka branch, will succeed Mr Yercoe.

The War Pensions Board is at present sitting in Christchurch, and will leave for the West Coast on Saturday morning. The board consists of Captain T. E. Y. Seddon. Dr Marshall Macdonald and Mr J. D- Harper, who represents the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Mr G. Harrison is accompanying the board as secretary. Mr O. J. Wright, Chief Postmaster at Invercargill, is about to retire from the Post and Telegraph Department, and will cease active duty on the evening of July 23. Mr Wright was formerly accountant in Christchurch. Mr G. Clark, relieving officer. General Post Office, is to act as chief postmaster for the present.
