SHIPPING SUBSIDY.
United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. WASHINGTON, July 17. The Associated Press understands that complete revision of the Government’s ocean mail policy has been planned by the administration to be effective within six months. The new arrangement contemplated will give direct subsidies where they are deemed necessary to build up the merchant marine. The mail will be handled on a poundage basis. It is estimated that such a policy will result in a saving of about 10,000,000 dollars a year. Figures show that the Government has paid in the past about 26,000,000 dollars for the ocean mails service, while on a poundage basis it would have been about 3,000,000 dollars.
