LENT SIDE DRUMS.
Failure to Return Military Equipment. The excuse that he had lent the articles and had been unable to secure their return was • made by R. H. Butcher, of Rosewarne Street, Spreydon, in the Magistrate's Court this morning, when charged with failing to deliver on demand articles of equipment valued at £3 7s Id, the property of the New Zealand Government. The Magistrate (Mr E. D. Bosley) adjourned the case until October 18, to enable the defendant to recover the articles or pay 2s 6cl a week towards their cost. An official of the Defence Department said tnat the equipment had been issued to the defendant on October 6. He was convicted of a civil offence, and was due for his disch?rge from the forces. He returned his uniform and everything except the side drums, slings, sticks and drum key. Many requests had been made to him to return them, but he said that he had lost them. Finally the defendant agreed to pay back 5s a week, but paid nothing for four months. Last week, however, he came to the office and paid 2s 6d.
