TELEPHONE SERVICE.
Improvements in Ashburton Exchange.
During the past few weeks officers of the Post and Telegraph Department have been busily engaged improving the telephone exchange at Ashburton. Part of the new equipment will be put into commission next Saturday night. This fact was mentioned this morning by .Mr J. C Fairbairn, District Telegraph Engineer. Mr Fairbairn explained that the improvements consisted of the replacing of single hundred number switchboards with a branching multiple switchboard. Under the new system it would be possible for one operator to answer any number and call any number. At the present time some of the numbers were not within the reach of one operator and the services of a second operator had to be employed. The new system, which would be in complete operation in about three weeks’ time, would make for quicker operating than that at present. “ Talks on Health ” will appear in to-morrow’s “ Star.”
