MENANCING SITUATION.
Workers Throughout U.S.A. on Strike. (Received July 18, 2.45 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 17. The situation throughout the country continued to grow in menace when 22,000 textile workers in Alabama walked out to-day, demanding recognition of their unions and improved working conditions,. Four thousand Minneapolis truck ' drivers struck this morning, charging the employers with violating the agreement which ended the trucking strike last May. Other unions debated a general sympathetic strike.
At Houston and other Texas Gulf ports the waterfront workers remained on strike for the principle of union recognition, but picketing was abandoned after the killing of three persons. Tear gas bombs were used at the Kohler Manufacturing Plant, at Kohler, Wisconsin, but pickets maintained their lines in the strike for union recognition. Motor-lorry drivers at Baltimore served an ultimatum on one company accused of violating the N.R.A. pledges. Tram operators at Omaha voted for a strike for union recognition and higher pay. Four hundred cigar-makers struck in York. Pennsylvania, alleging sweat-shop conditions, and other unions prepared to support them in the fight against the “ open shop.” Five hundred wool workers at Dayville (Connecticut) struck against the ” open shop.” Pecan shelters in Texas, most of whom are women, walked out, demanding higher wages and the right to organise. The oil workers’ strike at Philadelphia to day entered on its second week, and the Great Lakes tugboat strike on its second month. The issues of these also were union recognition.
