CAUGHT BY TIDE.
Car Badly Damaged on Ninety-mile Beach. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND. July 18. While motoring north along the Ninety-mile Beach to the Te Paki station Mr G. E. M’Killop, of Green Lane Road, Auckland, had the misfortune to be caught by the tide and his car, a large sedan model, was damaged practically beyond iepajr. After driving on to the beach from the Waipapakauri Road Mr M’Killop proceeded along the beach for about five miles when he stopped for a shoit period. The surface of the beach at present is very wet and Mr M’Killop did not notice that the wheels of the car were sinking. He attempted to move the vehicle without success and set off to telephone for assistance. A truck was sent out to the beach, out owing to the darkness and the rapidlyrising tide the salvage operations were unavailing. During the night the tide swept over the vehicle and the bodywork was almost completely smashed bv t'ne pounding of the waves and the salt water and sand penetrated throughout the engine. The car was later taken to Kaitaia.
