TASMAN RACE.

Auckland Yacht Morewa to Compete. CARRY 500 FT MORE SAIL. (Special to the " Star.”) AUCKLAND,. July 18. The 80-ton schooner yacht JVlorewa, built last year for Mr. J. W. S. McArthur by Mr. C. Wild, of Stanley Bay, has been hauled cut on the Harbour Board’s slip. Alterations are now m hand by her builder to prepare Morewa for the race from Auckland to Melbourne, for which the Centenary Celebrations Committee has allotted £3OO in prize money. The work to be done will keep the yacht on the. slip for over a month. It includes the extension of the counter by sft, making the overall length 80ft. A bowsprit, extending 10ft outboard, will be added, and the mainmast moved 3ft further for’ard. This will enable a big jib to be set and a much larger mainsail. adding 500 square feet of canvas to her present sail area. This extra sail will give the yacht a better chance in light weather, and Morewa should be a hard boat to beat. The deck cabins are being extended and minor alterations made below. So far the boats actually entered for the Tasman race, in addition to the Morewa. arc Captain G. Dibbcrn’s yawl Te Rapunga, Mr. J. Wray’s cruiser Ngataki, which he built after two years work at liife home in Remuera, and the Queen Charlotte, entered by Captain Watchlin, for whom she was built by Mr. G. R. Lane, of Picton. This boat is a schooner, 48ft overall, designed by Mr. J. M. Walls, of New York. Probable entrants are the 45ft schooner now being built at Judge's 13ay by Messrs. Cox and Filmer for Mr. J. Noakes, and a 40ft schooner now in course of construction by Mr. B. 18. Woollacott, of .Devonport -, also the Wellington yacht Seaward, now undergoing an overhaul on Meaar*. W. G. Lowe and Sons’ slip. Kntvies for the race close on November I, and -the race will start on December 5. The distance is 1040 miles.
