“SHOULD FLY HERE.”

Plans for Miss Batten’s Welcome. If Miss Jean Batten, New Zealand’s air heroine, does not intend to fly to Christchurch in her owi plane, Mr P. R. Climie, secretary to the Canterbury Aero Club, suggests that the club’s Fox Moth machine should go to Wellington and bring her down by air. “ It would be unthinkable for Miss Batten to come down on the interisland steamer,” he said this morning. “ The club intends to give Miss Batten a royal . public welcome at Wigram Aerodrome, so there is no other way for her to arrive but by air.” Last night Mr Climie received a telegram from Miss Batten, sent from Auckland just before she left for Wellington. It read: ‘‘Deeply appreciate your cordial message and welcome, and do hope to have pleasure of being in Christchurch for a couple of days later on. Jean Batten.” Miss Batten will have a busy time when she does arrive in Christchurch, for, besides the Aero Club welcome, a civic reception will be arranged for her, and she will probably have to fill many other semi-official engagements. She will stay at the United Service Hotel. Welcome to Wellington. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 27. Miss Jean Batten arrived in Wellington from Auckland this morning and was welcomed on the railway station by Captain Tweedie, aide-de-camp to Lord Bledisloe, whose guest she will be during her stay here; also by members of the executive and officers of the Wellington Aero Club and others. She was cheered and made the recipient of many congratulations before leaving for Government House. In addition to other functions arranged, Miss Batten will attend the ceremonies in connection with the opening of Parliament.
