FIERCE NOR’-WEST GALE.
Power and Telephone Poles Brought Down. (Special to the "Star.") ASHBURTON, June 27. A nor’-west gale of unusual velocity swept over the Mid-Canterbury Plains last night. At midnight it had reached its height, and although no serious damage is reported, windows and doors in houses rattled, and anything not securely' fastened was carried away. A number of trees were uprooted in various parts of the country. At Fairton, five spans of electric wires were brought down by falling trees, and current was cut off at Hinds and Cairnbrae through the same c#use. The Post Office reports that there was no serious damage, but two or three -telephone lines were broken at Mayfield, two at Methven, one at Hinds and two or three in Ashburton.
