RATIONED WORK.
Wellington Teachers Meet in Protest. SWEATING ALLEGATION. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON. June 26. | A meeting of Wellington and ban rationed teachers expressed whole-1 hearted disapproval of the present | rationing scheme on the following grounds: “(a) The rate of pay (approximately £1 a week) is grossly inadequate for fullv-trained teachers. “(b) The bulk of rationed teachers are in complete charge of classes of from twenty to forty children. This is gross exploitation of our services and is the means of reducing the number of children per teacher to the advantage of the permanent staff only at sweated rates of pay. “(c) The promised continuity of teaching has in many cases proved false. “(d) The scheme is resulting in loss of status and no immediate hope of future employment. “(e) The scheme is not working for the benefit of anyone but the department inasmuch as we are being asked to occupy positions of trust and responsibility in the community at less than a living wage, being maintained largely by our tax-paying parents. “We consider that the benefits of the smaller classes now in the schools could be retained and full employment for rationed teachers made possible by these measures: “(a) The return of five-year-olds. “(b) An increase in the education vote. “ (c) The reopening of grade 0 schools. “(d) An increase in the number of the ‘permanent’ relieving staff and the restoration of their full rate of relieving pay. “(e) Complete staffing of schools with the requisite number of Grade 1 assistants, whosq. positions are now being filled by rationed teachers at £6O a year.’’
