Meeting of Canterbury Union. PLAYERS PENALISED. Tine Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union met last evening, Dr W. S. Seed presiding. A letter was received from Air R. T. Bailey, referee of last Saturday’s second grade match between Merivale and Technical Old Boys, in which he reported that he had ordered off K. Hartland (Merivale) and E. Vallance (Technical Old Boys) for fighting. Both players appeared before the committee and denied fighting. The referee said that the game was a very hard one and he had issued a general warning twice. He saw the two players shaping up to each other and he ordered them off. He regretted to say that there was talk of fight in the dressing rooms after the S It wa.s decided to order the players to stand down for one playing Saturday and to draw the attention of the two clubs to tire referee’s allegation of " talk of fight ” in the dressing room. Mr K. IT. Perrin, another referee wrote reporting that he had ordered r.ff M. Robinson, of the Bromley third grade A team, for striking an opponent. The player said that he had not struck anyone, but. had pushed a man who had | pushed him over needlessly. Robinson was ordeied l" stand down for two playing Saturdays. The Belfast Club was given permission to take mi a collection at its matches at Sheldon Park. Belfast, providing a return is furnished to the union. It was decided to allow the use of the oval at Lancaster Park for the match between the Christchurch Boys’ High Softool and the Waitaki Boys’ High School on Wednesday, August 1. provided the ground was in good order. Shield Challenges. When a letter was rend from the Ashburton Union, asking whether its challenge for the Ranfufly Shield had be*m accepted or not. it was explained mat there were challenges from Ashburton Buller and South Canterbury to which no dates had been allotted, there being only two dates available. The matter was held over till after July 21. the elate of the Hawke's Bay challenge mat eh. It was decided to play a first grade team against North Canterbury at Woodend. as the sub-union requested. The North Canterbury Sub-Union was to be asked to submit a date. The North Canterbury Club* wrote novising that some of its players had had clot Ives and valuables stolen from the dressing sheds at the polo ground. Several tnembers mentioned other instances of pilfering. Arrangements for coping with this nuisance were left in th? hands of Dr Seed and the secretary. Tt was reported that Linwood. who had a bye next Saturday, would respond to tire Buller Union’s invitation for a first grade team to visit Westport and play a match there. The Buller Union guaranteed £35. The Competitions Committee recommended that the first grade competition should he played right out whil** that the Otago Union he advisvd that the Payne Trophv match could not be played on August 4 as suggested. Th; recommendations were adopted. On the recommendation of the Competitions Committee it was decided to advise the Ashburton Union that the Canterbury B v. Ashburton match, pen oilled for August 4, could not lye plriyevi till some date subsequent to August IS. The Competitions Committee reported that the Police v. Press match had been set. down for September S. at present vacant. If the Ranfnrly Shield was still held and a challenge was entered, the match could be played as a curtainraiser to the challenge match; if ther** were no challenge, tlve Police v. Press match would be Hie main attraction. The meeting confirmed the action of the Competitions Committee in drawing the Old Boys v. Sunnyside game for the Lancaster Park oval on Saturday. It was pointed out that tins match counted for the Challenge Cup. The motion had to be put to the vote and was carried by seven votes to six.
