ASHBURTON NEWS.

Milk Scheme Discussed at Allenton.

(Special to the " Star.’*) ASI-IBURTOX, June 13. It was reported at the monthlymeeting of the Allenton School Committee last evening (Mr E. C. Bathurst presiding) that the present roll number was 252 (137 boys and 115 girls). The attendance, it was stated, had been adversely affected by influenza. Mr W. Hunter had taken up his duties as assistant master and Miss E. Jary was relieving in the position vacated by Miss N. Flynn. The Sunlight League’s proposed milk scheme was discussed and the following resolution was carried: ,! While recognising that the supply of milk to certain children would be beneficial, this committee is of the opinion that all the children should have the opportunity of receiving the milk, and as the infant class at Allenton consisted of fifty-two children, this would entail a cost of about £1 per week. The committee regrets that at present it is not in a position to finance the scheme.” Messrs W. James and C. Maynard were appointed a visiting committee. During the winter months hot cocoa will be supplied to the children attending the school. A small fee will be charged. This was arranged until the milk scheme proposed by the Ashburton branch of the Sunlight League is brought into operation. Allenton Fire Brigade. The first instructional practice was held by the recently-formed fire brigade at Allenton last evening under the direction of Mr D. E. M’Dougall. Two members of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade, Foreman H. Hefford and Fireman R. Leask, assisted at the practice. A meeting will be held next Tuesday evening to elect officers.
