BRIDGE EXPERT.
Ely Culbertson May Visit New Zealand. MELBOURNE. June 7. Through the International Bridge Union, Mr Ely Culbertson, world-fam-ous contract bridge expert and critic, is endeavouring to arrange for an American team of four to visit Melbourne for the Centenary. In giving this advice by letter* to the secretary of the Victorian Bridge Association (Mr F. B. Smith), Mr Culbertson also stated that he would visit Australia, and possibly New Zealand, next year. He would bring an American team with him. Six months ago the American team captained by Mr Culbertson won the Schwab trophy, regarded as the bridge championship of the world. Mr Culbertson also informed Mr Smith that he was very interested in the home and home match method of playing pennant bridge, introduced by the Victorian Association. He intended to publish details sent him by Mr Smith in the next issue of his magazine, the “ Bridge World.”
