FRUIT MARKETING.
Improvements Decided on at Conference. BRITISH FARMERS’ MOVE. United Press Assn. —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received June 14, 11.45 am.) LONDON, June 13. The Fruit Conference has conducted and a statement has been issued stating that an arrangement has been made to improve the distribution of apples and pears in Britain without increasing the retail prices. It was agreed to urge growers throughout the Empire to adopt standard packing, grading and nomenclature and to eliminate undesirable varieties to ensure regular supplies of the best Empire fruit. It also was decided to establish a permanent London committee associated with the Empire producers’ organisation to maintain and develop co-opera-tion. The British delegate said that he realised that England was the market for the whole Empire in respect to apples and pears. He anticipated closer cooperation in future. Protection Against New Zealand. The National Farmers’ Union will shortly approach the Government, seeking increased protection, inter alia, on fruit. This action follows last year’s apple shipments from Australia and New Zealand, particularly the latter, which continued until late in August, thus depressing the home-grown market.
