WAR DEBTS POSITION.
Most Interest Centres on Method of Payment.
British Official Wireless. (Received June 14, 11.30 a.m.) RUGBY, June 13
The United States Government’s reply to the recent British Note on waxdebts was handed to Sir- Ronald Lindsay yesterday and was considered by the British Cabinet at its usual weekiy meeting.
The reference in the reply to payments in kind attracts the most atier tion both in America and Britain, since it is the first occasion on which the United States Government has indicated its willingness to accept a payment in kind and, incidentally, by to ‘doing has recognised the transfer problem.
Newspaper messages from Washington record the varied opinions of Congressmen on the suggestion. Senator Stephens, chairman of the Commerce Committee, _is reported to favour acceptance of the commodities provided they do not compete with domestic production, or increase unemployment. Senator H. Rainey thinks the suggestion the best yet made. Senator W. Hill thinks that the process of transferring to and from private ownership for Government accounts w’ill be very complicated. Senator A. Robinson thinks that American industry and the workers would be penalised, and that the scheme is not practical. Senator Borah thinks that it requires further study.
