COMMUNITY SINGING.
“ Gran’s ” Assurance About Her Cooking.
The third of this year’s commun : ty singing sessions, held in the Civic Theatre to-day, drew a full house and provided much merriment. Mr Alan Brown was song leader, and Mr H. E. Goodland was at the piano. Composed mainly of women and girls, the audience sang with relish the old and new favourites, of which they never seem to tire. “ Let’s All Sing Like the Birdies Sing ” -was given novel treatment. Mr Brown made the crowd cluck, squawk and grunt in farmyard noises.
At intervals between the songs he drew on an assortment of vague brown paper parcels and boxes, piled on one side of the stage, which materialised into cakes, cough mixture and other commodities for auction.
“None of the singers appear to be dead } r et, so I am sending another batch of my cooking,” wrote “ Gran,” of Gloucester Street. She gave four walnut loaves and two home-made loaves, which brought good prices. A pineapple sponge fetched 2s, and a collection of pastry drew a daring bid of 3s. No one appeared to be suffering from coughs, so some bottles of cough mixture had to be hawked among the audience. Many donations were received from listeners-in, one in particular, for £3 3s, coming from a motorist who savj he would be hearing the session on his car radio while motoring between Oamaru and Timaru.
Mr W. Toomey gave two tenor solos. With the collection and the proceeds from auctioned goods, £3l 11s 4d was received for the Mayor’s Relief of Distress Fund.
