BAPTISM BY J.P.

No Legal Provision, It is Claimed. Reference to a baptism by a Justice of the Peace in the back country of North Canterbury was made in the report of the Public Questions Committee received at this morning’s meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery. The report stated that it had been declared that provision existed for baptisms by Justices of the Peace where no minister was available, and inquiries had been made from the Clerk of Assembly. Although the family concerned belonged to the Anglican Church, the alleged power given to a State official was the concern of every Church. The clerk had replied that as far as he could ascertain no legal provision existed of the sort qlaimed by the J.P. in question. If some churches made provision for baptism by laymen in certain circumstances, that was purely an internal matter for those churches and had no bearing on the official functions of a Justice of the Peace.
