BASKETBALL NOTES.
(By “GOALIE.**) • Owing to the cold weather on Saturday, the usual decisiveness in passing and holding the ball was not seen in A grade play. There is still a shortage of referees. It seems that girls do not understand that A grade teams which have byes are expected to turn up to help with the refereeing. Digby’s toon the offensive from the beginning, some fast passing being wit- , ne.ssed. Varsity failed to handle the ; ball as skilfully as their opponents. Digby's kept play in their goal base, but the shooting was wild, and many i excellent chances of scoring were lost, j Varsity's field work was not up to its usual good standard, and Digby’s fast j passing won the match by five goals. I O. Wheatly is adding to her standing as a field player by increased accuracy in shooting. She gained United some useful goals against Technical. Play in the first half was even. Technical seemed always able to produce another goal to balance the score. United’s ■ combination was good—it would have 1 .
demoralised a weaker team. Technical pressed hard, but lost * several goals through passing too much at the goalmouth. They made United fight* however, for their win by 19*-12. Beckenham’s win over Mairehau was not an exciting one. Mairehau were two short, and Beckenham took things much too easily. Play was scrappy. the simplest passing being fumbled. It w»» a most disappointing exhibition from two teams which are usually looked to for bright play. Beckenham won 15-9. Varsity B gave a good account of themselves aga‘nst Waita, keening the score even until half-time. The second snell was a brisk fight, with Varsity r»re*-sing hard. Varsity B won by three go'>’s. Merivale did not defend well a»ain«t A B C. Both tearns lacked style in field play. Merivale’s comb l oat lon was v-«-ak. and Individual work did not help them against the stronger A.B.C. team. Beckenham B lost ground through when »n possession of the ball.
