Notes on Second Grade Games.

As a result of the seventh round of matches in the second grade competition, Sunnyside and Christchurch are now leading, but as Sunnyside are going into the senior competition next week Christchurch will be at the head of the ‘•ompetition. half a point in front of Old Boys. With the form displayed by Old Boys against Linwood on Saturday, however. Christchurch will be lucky if they stay there.

Athletic put up a good fight against Merivale, wh6 won by 12 points to 6. Varsity gained their first win of ihe season, defeating Kaianoi 4-0. Christchurch beat Albion 33-8. Sunnyside had an easy win over Sydenham, and Technical Old Boys beat St Andrew’s Old Roys 25-6. The following table shows the positions of the teams:—

XEBI7ALE (12) V. ATHLETIC (6). From the start Merivale attacked strongly, and good work by their forwards enabled them to gain an early lead. Their defence was sound. In the second spell the Athletic forwards had the better of the opposing pack, and time after time swept play on to Merivale’s line, only to he sent back by the backs, who often turned defence into attack.

W. Anderson and K. Hartland wen the mainstay of the Merivale pack. ■ ;

Briggs shone as a breakaway, and often led loose forward rushes. R. Garrett and H. Barker combined well at fiveeighths, .and staged some nice movements. E. Nee (full-back) was sound and made few mistakes.

R. Daly and G. Glubb were the pick i of the Athletic forwards. Among the backs. T. Roach was always prominent for his steady play, and worked in well with O. Scully, who played a reliable game at first five-eighth. J. Noonan (centre) also showed up to advantage, being useful in attack. OLD BOVS (16) r. LINWOOD (16). Although Old Boys and Linwood both fielded good teams, the game was a disappointing one from a spectator's point of view*. Old Boys were the better side. Linwood established an early lead, and at half-time the score was S-3. but in the second spell Old Boys began to throw the ball about and looked like winning by a fair margin. However, when they gained the lead, they slackened up, and Linwood scored two more tries in quick time. Old Bovs then made a desperate endeavour to regain the lead, but were only able to achieve a draw. Grenfell played a fine game on the wing for Linwood. Taking full advantage of the poor tackling by Old Boys, he gained a great deal of ground by determined running. Brown and Robb also went well, but as a combination the Linwood backs were not a success. Asher. Revell and Gunderson were prominent among the forwards. For Old Boys the two wing threequarters, Chapman and Cobden, were the only barks to show real form. I Among the forwards Lee and Ironsides! were well supported by North, but the i others were disappointing. « « SUNNYSIDE (29) V. SYDENHAM (7). Sunnyside are particularly dangerous ; when forwards and barks combine in • loose passing rushes. On Saturday they I demonstrated this three times, sweeping the whole length of the field. Their open play should appeal to Lancaster j Park patrons. Mahoney is capable of ! pining a place in any first-grade team ■ ith credit. He is a fine full-back. ! The Hart-Chenery-Cox combination is as*
