DRIVE FOR CLOTHES.

Successful Efforts of Boy Scouts and Postmen.

An ever-generous people, following the public-spirited attitude adopted by the postmen and Boy Scouts of the city and suburbs, made the second annual house-to-house clothes drive held on Saturday an overwhelming success. During the afternoon, 5227 parcels were collected, and monetary gifts are estimated to bring in £l2. One of the biggest problems facing the relief depot* is to obtain sufficient clothing to distribute to the distressed members of the community, but this problem is not likely to be a pressing one for some time to come, judging by the huge bundles that were gathered by the postmen and Scouts. Though the number of parcels collected was not as large as in the previous year, the quality of the goods was much higher.

Over sixty motor vehicles, lent by business firms and private owners, gathered outside the central relief depot in Kilmore Street shortly before one o’clock, and by 1.5 o’clock the first vehicle, set out on the self-imposed afternoon’s work. Some fifty postmen voluntarily gave up their half-holiday to cover their rounds, and they were assisted by upwards of thirty-five Scouts. More Scouts would have been welcomed, but those available worked with a will, and proved to be of tremendous assistance.

The arrangements for despatching the men were in the hands of Mr A. G. Anton, Supervisor of Postmen, and Messrs A. C. Clark and L. V. Whall, members of the postal staff. The Scouts were controlled by District Scoutmaster E. Culverhouse. “ The postmen’s drive has been a great success, thanks to the postmen. Boy Scouts and city firms,” said the director of the Central Relief Depot (Mr T. H. Cape-Williamson). “The number of parcels may not be as large as last year but the quality of the goods has been very good. The thanks of the city are due to all those who worked so willingly to make the appeal a success.”
