OBITUARY.

Frederick Knights. The death occurred at Lyttelton on Saturday of Frederick Knights, a retired member of the New Zealand Permanent Artillery and a justice of the peace. Mr Knights was born in the town of Diss, in Norfolk, and came to New Zealand with an uncle and aunt sixtv-two years. He worked for his uncle for a period and then joined the New Zealand Militia at the time of the Maori War. He served in the Waikato, at Qpunake and Taupo and at the conclusion of hostilities he was appointed to the Armed Constabulary. When the Armed Constabularlv became the New Zealand Permanent Force Mr Knights was appointed military instructor at Lyttelton, which appointment he took up forty-eight years ago. At the time of the South African war he was quarter* master in charge at the various camps held at Addington prior to the departure of the various contingents. He retired in 1912 with the rank of Warrant Officer Battery Sergeant-Major and made a visit to England.

As a justice of the peace Mr Knights was frequently on the bench at Lyttelton for a long period of years and he recently retired from the Lyttelton Licensing Committee after about twentyfive years’ service. lie took no part in local public work, but performed considerable benevolent work in an un- | ostentatious way. lie was a Past Master of the Kilwinning Masonic Lodge, No. 23 and was at one time a member of the Lyttelton Bowling Club. Woods. Per Presj. A^o^atlon. DUNEDIN, June 10. The death occurred at Lawrence on Saturday of Mr J. J. Woods, at the age of eighty-five years. Deceased was appointed clerk to the Tuapeka Cduntv Council when it was formed in 1577 and held the position until he retired two years ago. He achieved distinction in the musical world as composer of the score of the New Zealand National Anthem, “God Defend New Zealand.”
