CRASH INTO HOUSE.

Driver Abandons Stolen Motor-car. PURSUIT BY A CONSTABLE. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, May 21. Sensational features were attached to an unsuccessful attempt made late on Saturday night by a constable to arrest the driver of a car which had been stolen earlier in the evening. When abandoned by the driver, the car crashed into a house and did considerable damage. On Saturday evening a Mr Young, of St Heliers Bay, left his car outside a picture theatre. When he returned shortly after 10 p.m. he found the car was missing and reported the loss to the police. At midnight Constable J. M’Kenzie, while on duty in Newton Road, recognised the number of a passing car as that of the missing one. He immediately gave chase and succeeded in overtaking the car, which was travelling slowly, near the intersection of Burgoyne and Chapman Streets. As soon as the driver saw the constable he started off, but Constable M’Kenzie jumped on to the right hand running board. After the car had gone some distance along the road the driver opened the door and tried to push the constable on to the roadway. Unsuccessful in doing this, the driver jumped out of the car, leaving the engine running. The constable also jumped off the car and both driver and policeman fell on the roadway. The man, however, escaped by climbing over a fence and disappearing in the darkness. Without a driver, the car careered down a slight incline, crashed into a gate at No. 2A, Burgoyne Street, and carried the gate on to the front door, doing considerable damage.
