Selected from nearly 250 applicants from all parts of the Dominion, eight stokers (second class) were enrolled on 11.M.5. Philomel, training ship of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, at Devonport last week. The young men, whose ages are between 18 and 22, will undergo three months’ training on the Philomel before being drafted for sea service. When applications were called for two months ago 245 were received This number was reduced by medical, educational and other tests to 53, which number came before the selection committee on Wednesday and Thursday. The task of making the final selections was a difficult one. as the general standard cf the applicants was excellent. The number finally chosen comprises one from Dunedin, one from Timaru, one from Wanganui, one from Wellington, three from Hamilton, and one from Auckland.
