JEWELLERY STOLEN.
Thieves Enter Fendalton Home. MADE CAREFUL SEARCH. Thieves entered the residence of Mr G. L. Donaldson, Holm wood Road, Fendalton, cn Friday evening and stole jewellery valued at £7O. Entry was apparently gained through the sittingroom door, which had been left unlocked. The burglars made a careful search of every drawer in the house, but replaced everything they moved and departed, leaving everything in order. It is believed that the theft took place at about nine o’clock, as neighbours saw a light in one of the upstairs rooms and came to the conclusion that some of the members of the family were at home. No money was secured and a sum of £4 left in a bedroom was overlooked. A guest of the family had left this amount lying on a dressing-table and had thrown his pyjamas over it. The thieves painstakingly searched his room and even went through his pocketbook, which was in the inside pocket of a coat hanging in a wardrobe. They secured nothing there and after making a search of other likely-looking places in the room departed, leaving the money intact under the pyjamas. Amongst the jewellery taken was a valuable presentation gold watch which has Mr Donaldson’s name inscribed on it. It was a gift from the committee of the Patriotic Fund, and it is believed that it cost in the vicinity of £6O. The ether jewellery taken belonged to Mrs Donaldson. Mr Donaldson, who is the secretary of the Christchurch Amateur Operatic Society, was, with the other members of his family, attending a performance bv the society on Fridav evening. The family returned home at about ll p.in. and the theft was discovered some time later. Besides the jewellery the thieves took a full bottle and a half-bottle of whisky.
