SMOKE NUISANCE.

Legislation Desired by Sunlight League. DEPUTATION TO MAYOR. The support of the Mayor, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., in a movement to secure legislation designed to deal with the smoke nuisance, was sought by a deputation from the Sunlight League which waited on him this morning. The deputation consisted of Miss Cora Wilding, Miss Marian Reese, Mrs J- . Crac-roft Wilson, Dr C. Coleridge Farr, Dr D. E. Currie and Mr C. G. M’Kel lar. Mr J. S. Barnett, acting-chairman of the Works Committee of the City Council, and the City Engineer (Mr A R. Galbraith) were also present. Mr M’Kellar said it was not hoped to do anything regarding the smoke nuisance from every cottage, but the deputation thought that something should be done to control the nuisance created b ythe bigger chimneys in the city. Dr Currie said that the health-giv-ing rays of the sun could possibly be prevented from reaching the earth by heavy smoke. In some countries was an offence to pollute the air with smoke. Dr Farr said it was quite certain that fogs were caused by smoke. Great care was taken to see that the people were given pure food and pure water, and the same care should be taken about the air. The general opinion was that the destructor chimney was one of the big offenders in the city. Use of Eliminators. » Mr Galbraith, after disclaiming responsibility for the destructor, said it 1 was suggested that the council should instal smoke eliminators, and that matter would be considered shortly. He had recommended the council to adopt, the masticator system for the disposal | of refuse, but, because of the difficult times, it had not been possible to extend the use of the system.
