Geographic Board’s Policy Explained.

Place names approved by the Honorary Geographic Board of New Zealand and adopted officially for use on maps and elsewhere are published in a bulletin issued by the board under the authority of the Minister of Lands (the Hon E. A. Ransom). When names have been changed or corrected and are not too firmly established by local usage or otherwise, the board has restored the original forms. The board has also laid down that alternative names should be discontinued where possible, and that possessive form should be avoided whenever it can be done without destroying the euphony of the name or changing its descriptive application. This ruling is carried out in connection with Arthur’s Pass, which is given as Arthur Pass in the board’s list. The following place names agreed upon affect Canterbury and West Coast: Mountains and peaks—Baldy a hill in the Cragieburn Range; Bruce Murray, a peak on the Panorama Ridge, " < r ar . the , terminal of the Classen Glacier; Mounts Cheesman, Cloudsley and Cockayne, in the Cragieburn Range; Comyns Peak, in the Agassiz Range, at the head of the Mathias River; Mount Crossley, in The Candlesticks Range, at the head of the Waimakariri; Mount Frederick Gardiner, between Mounts Spencer and Aurora, Southern Alps; Mount Gariner, opjoosite the new Chancellor Ridge hut, near Mount Cook; Gerard Peak, at the head of the Mathias River; Harold Pass, between Mounts Lendenfeld and Tasman; Jan Col, on the Hurunui and Waimakariri watershed; Mount Izard, Cragieburn Range; Jellicoe Peak, Southern Alps; Joie de Vivre Glacier, from a col between Mounts Sydney King and Acland to the Classen Glacier: Mount Manson, Cragieburn Range; Marcel Pass, between Mounts Tendenfeld and Tasman; Maud Pass, between Maud and Neish Glaciers, G.odley district; Moonlight Peak, close to Mount Rudolf, Southern Alps; Mount Morrison, Waimakariri headwaters; Mystery Peak, head of Mathias River; Newton Peak, head of Lambert River, Westland; New Year Pass, on Karangarua Range, Westland; Omatane Glacier, head of Mathias; Pluto Peak, Forbes Range, Southern Alps. Poulter Hill, near the Cox River, a tributary to the Waimakariri: Pukewhero Peak, east of the terminal face of the Godley Glacier; Roche Pass. Hurunui-Waimakariri watershed : Mount Row, near Cox River; Seymour Peak, Godley district: Mount Stephen, Sefton Range, Southern Alps: Sturdee Peak, near Harper Saddle, Mount Coiok. replacing the name Beatty: Surveyors Col, Landsborough System, Southern Alps; Abbess and Abbott Peaks, Liebig Range, Mount Cook district; the Commander Peak, head of Godley Glacier; the Marquee Peak. Rivers and Streams—Casey Stream, flowing into the Poulter River; Cox River, flows into Poulter; Kaipurua, a tributary of the Waiau River; Lake Kaniere, Westland, not spelt Kanieri: Mill Creek, Westland, replaces the name Nelson Creek; Minchin Stream, replaces name Louper Stream, near Poulter River; Opouniki Stream, on the Jacobs River, not Opuko; Thompson Stream, a Poulter tributary. Other Names—Kowhitirangi Post Office, Westland, not Koiterangi; Maitahi Post Office. Westland, not Maliitahi; Nihomanga Kaikoura, the name of a chief noted in Maori history; Te 1 kaamaru, Kaikoura coast, or, with hyphens, Te Ika-Whataroa.
