Waiuta ”.—lsolated voyages were made by the “ Savannah” from the United States, in 1819, and by the first " Royal William ” from Canada in 1833, but it is not known whether these were across the Atlantic. The first London to New York crossing bv a steamship was made by the 700-to* steam paddle steamer “ Sirius.” The vesset left London for Cork on March 28, 1838. and left that port on April 4, for NeYork. She reached New York on April 22. alter a passage of seventeen days. The ” Sirius ” was owned by the St George Steam Packet Company, one of three con*, panies formed at practically the same time for trading purposes.
