SCENIC ROAD WORK.

No Provision Made for Competition. The council of the Canterbury Automobile Association met last evening, Mr W. R. Carey presiding. Sixty-five new members were elected?, making a total for the year of 566. Mr F. W. Freeman reported on the position with regard to putting the Summit Road, from the Sign of the Kiwi to Gebbie's Pass, in proper order. At the present time, he said, the road was formed, but was not metalled. The sum of £IB,OOO of Public Works money had been expended on the road, but no provision had been made fop completion and maintenance. There was a danger that the county councils concerned would 1 be saddled with the metalling and maintenance -of the road. The matter should be ‘ brought before the notice of the Main Highways Board. It would be a good thing, said Mr Freeman, if, in future, provision was made for the completion of scenic roads before they were commenced. rt was not only the Summit Road which was concerned. He moved that the following remit be forwarded to the Souih Island Motor Union for discussion at the quarterly meeting: "That, as these roads were constructed for scenic purposes, adequate provision be made for their completion and subsequent maintenance.” The motion was carried.
