EMPIRE GAMES TEAM.

Hackett Dropped From List of Nominations. rer Press .Aaaocl.it ton. WELLINGTON, April 19. It was decided bv the council cl the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, at a special meeting this afternoon, not to nominate P. T- Hackett (Auckland), holder of the New Zealand high jump championship title, as a candidate for inclusion in the New Zealand team for the British Empire Games. When, towards the end of last month, the council nominated H. K. Brainsby (Auckland), T. G. Broadway (Canterbury) and J. E. Lovelock (Oxford University), it was considered that Hackett should undergo a further trial Trials took place in Auckland on April 7 and on April 14. Hackett failed tc clear six feet, his best jump on each occasion being 6ft 10:Un. The council had before it to-day a report from Mr V. Hugo, who was appointed to supervise the trial, and a letter from Hackett who suggested himself that, in view of his failure to clear the six-foot mark, he should be dropped. Hackett said it appeared that he would be unable to do six feet again this season. He was very disappointed, but he hoped to do better next athletic season. Appreciation was expressed of Hackfctt’s letter and the attitude he adopted, and it was decided to send a letter to him to that effect. The council also had before it a request from Dunedin to reconsider the candidature of E. C. Brown, the Otago distance runner. The council, however, did not favour the nomination.
