Mander, general secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, said that the raising of the exchange rate undoubtedly in one respect had been of advantage to New Zealand manufacturers. It had increased the landed costs of competing imports. Nevertheless New Zealand manufacturers had not taken advantage of this to put up their own prices. Their aim was to undersell imported goods in order to obtain a larger share of the market. The net benefit to New Zealand manufacturers was much smaller than was commonly supposed.
