Meeting of St Stephen’s Social Club. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, April 18. At the annual meeting of St Ste phen’s Literary and Social Club, Mr S. M. Cassidy presiding, the following office-bearers were elected:—Patron, Rev A. J. Petrie; president, Mr S. M. Cassidy; vice-presidents, Messrs R. H. Biggar, G. V. .Furby, H. Paterson and Dr G. I. Miller; secretary, Mr A. Protheroe; treasurer, Mr C. C. Childs; librarian, Mr M. Lees. Mr Cassidy promised a gold medal for the most improved speaker during the season, previous winners cf competitions not being eligible, and Mr A. Mitchell donated a silver medal for the second prize. The judges will be Messrs Biggar. Cassidy and the Rev A. J. Petrie. Physical Training Club. There was a good attendance at the first annual meeting of St Andrew’s Physical Training Club last evening The Rev R. S. Watson presided. The following officers were elected:—President, Rev R. S. Watson; instructor, Mr A. Calder; secretary, Mr M. G. Hampton; treasurer, Mr G. Lithgow; com mittee, Messrs L. Wilson, R. Ross, A. Parish and L. Forbes. The session donated a safety mat. Cavendish Club’s “At Home.” A delightful musical programme was given by Mrs F. Bates (Miss Gladys Vincent), the well-known Christchurch violinist, at the Ashburton Cavendish Club’s “At Home ” on Wednesday afternoon. The programme was as follows:—“Adagio Pathetique’’ (Godard), “Mazurka Chopin” (arranged oy Kreisler), “Allegretto Quasi Andante Sonata ’ (Grieg), “Hornpipe” (by Mistowski), “Romance” (Svensven). “An Air on G String” (Bach), “ Rondino Beethoven” (arranged by Kreisler) and “Poupee Valsante ” (Ed. Poldini) The accompanist was Miss A Ruddock, who also played the following pianoforte solos “Jardiif Sous la Pliue,” “Valse Lente” (Merikanto). Lodge Meetings. The C.R. (Brother L. J. Strange) presided over a meeting of Court Ashburton, A.O.F. A welcome was extended to Brother Shipley, C.R. of Court St*r of Greendale. . Brother P. Choak reported that he had attended the Foresters’ picnic at Stewart's Gully on Easter Monday. At a meeting of the Success of Ashburton Lodge, U.A.0.D., last evening, the A.D. (Sister B. Wallis) presided. The bards reported on visits to sick members and sick pay was passed for payment. An invitation from the Star of Ashburton Lodge to attend a ritual competition at its next meeting was accepted. It was reported that arrangements had been made to commence the card socials next Saturday.
