The Case for Secession in Australia. PUBLIC SERVICE INCREASE. (Special to the “ Star.*’) MELBOURNE, April 13. To emphasise the fact that the Com monwealth Administration has outgrown all intentions at the time of ' federation, “ the Case for Secession/’ prepared under the instructions of the Western Australian Government, points out that the number of officers in the Commonwealth service, drawing more than £IOOO a year, has increased from thirty-three in 1013 to 183 in 1929, while the total amount they received in remuneration has increased from £52 000 to £286,789. “ Further evidence of the growth of Federal administration,” continues the Case, is provided bv a comparison of one of the departments which is duplicated in Western Australia by the Commonwealth service, namely the Health Department. In 1913 the department was in charge of Dr Cumpston and he was the only officer in the department drawing a Sal ™ of not less than £IOOO a yea!. By 1929 the position was:— senior medicai officer £1020; chief quarantine, Victoria, £1112; chief quarantine.
